Parents—not the government—have the constitutional and statutory right to direct the education and upbringing of their children. The Liberty Justice Center’s PARENTS Initiative stands with families when schools, government officials, and powerful special interests infringe on parental rights, limit educational options, or silence parents advocating for their children.
We fight to ensure parents are informed, respected, and free to make the best decisions for their children’s education and future.

Parents Know Their Children Best
Every child is different. Every family is different. And no government official should have more authority over a child’s education and upbringing than that child’s parents.
Across the country, parents are being shut out of decisions that affect their children, denied access to information, blocked from educational opportunities, and silenced when they raise concerns.
The PARENTS Initiative exists to change that.
We defend families who are standing up for transparency, educational freedom, and the right to speak openly about what is happening in their schools.

What We Stand For
Parents Aren't the Problem. They're the Point.
The PARENTS Initiative stands for parental notification and opt out rights, school choice, and parents and students right to free speech.
Parents Have a Right to Know
Parents should never be kept in the dark about what is happening with their children at school.
Families deserve transparency from public schools, access to information about their children’s education, and notice when important decisions are being made that affect their children’s well-being.
Schools exist to serve children and families, not to replace parents.
Families Deserve Educational Freedom
Parents should have the freedom to use public funds allocated for their children to pursue the educational opportunities that best fit their needs.
For some families, that may mean a traditional public school. For others, it may be a charter school, private school, homeschool, or another learning environment.
No child should be trapped in a school that fails to meet their needs simply because of their ZIP code or family income.
Parents and Students Have the Right to Speak Up
School officials cannot silence parents who speak out about their children’s education or the performance of public servants.
Parents have the right to ask questions, request information, participate in public meetings, criticize government officials, and advocate for their children without fear of censorship or retaliation.
When parents speak up, they are not the problem. They are doing their job.
Why This Fight Matters
Parental rights are not political talking points. They are fundamental freedoms.
Parents are responsible for raising their children, guiding their education, protecting their well-being, and making decisions that shape their futures. Government officials should respect that role—not undermine it.
But too often, families find themselves facing powerful institutions that refuse to listen. A single parent asking basic questions can be treated like a threat. A family seeking a better school can run into government barriers. Parents trying to understand what is happening in the classroom can be denied information they have every right to see.
