Dean McGee

Senior Counsel & Director of Educational Freedom, Liberty Justice Center

Dean McGee is the Director of Liberty Justice Center’s Educational Freedom practice, where he leads strategic litigation to advance school choice and defend civil liberties in education. He has represented parents, students, educators, school boards, and reform advocates in cases across the country.

Dean brings more than a decade of high-stakes litigation experience. He began his career at an international law firm, where he litigated securities, class action, and complex commercial matters for global financial institutions. He also devoted significant time to pro bono work serving on the legal team for Doctors Without Borders and staffing legal clinics for veterans and homeless youth.

Dean later served as a law clerk to the Honorable William H. Pauley III of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, and went on to become a litigation partner at a regional New York firm, where Hudson Valley Magazine named him a Top Lawyer in civil litigation.

As a parent of young children during the COVID-19 pandemic, Dean was inspired to lead Liberty Justice Center’s Educational Freedom practice after experiencing firsthand the negative impact of government policies on students and families. At Liberty Justice Center, Dean has become a national leader in education-related constitutional litigation. His writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Chicago Tribune, and other national outlets, and he has been featured on national news programs to discuss education policy and the constitutional rights of families.

Dean graduated first in his class from St. John’s University School of Law, where he served as Research Editor of the St. John’s Law Review. He earned his B.A. in political science, cum laude, from SUNY Geneseo.
