The Chino Valley Unified School District has voted to update its parental notification policy in response to a judge’s recent rulings in California v. Chino Valley Unified School District.
The Liberty Justice Center is representing the Chino Valley Unified School District at zero cost as it defends its parental notification policy against a legal challenge by California Attorney General Rob Bonta.
The updated policy, passed on March 7, maintains the District’s original requirement that school administrators notify parents within three days if their child requests changes to their official or unofficial records, but removed language from the policy requiring staff to notify parents when a student requests to use a bathroom or pronouns that differ from their sex at birth.
“The District remains committed to protecting parental rights and providing a safe environment for all of its students, parents, and teachers,” said Emily Rae, Senior Counsel at the Liberty Justice Center. “We believe that both versions of Chino Valley’s parental notification policy are common sense and constitutional, particularly in light of the recent ruling in the Temecula Valley Unified School District case, which reaffirmed that parents’ right to direct their children’s upbringing is essential, not negotiable.”
“The updated policy strikes a balance between two important principles—prioritizing students’ well-being and upholding parents’ rights—and ensures that parents are kept informed every step of the way,” said Sonja Shaw, President of the Chino Valley Unified School Board.
