Victory for Student Rights: Department of Education Forms New Title IX Special Investigations Team After LJC Complaint

April 4, 2025

The Liberty Justice Center commends the U.S. Department of Education for establishing a new Title IX Special Investigations Team (SIT) to investigate complaints of Title IX violations. This initiative represents a critical step toward ensuring that schools across the nation uphold the rights of students and comply with federal law, particularly in cases involving the inappropriate placement of males in women’s spaces.

The SIT aligns perfectly with the Liberty Justice Center’s ongoing efforts to protect the privacy, dignity, and safety of students. Two weeks ago, the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) launched investigations into the Illinois Department of Education, Chicago Public Schools, and Deerfield Public Schools District 109 following a complaint filed by the Liberty Justice Center and the Defense of Freedom Institute.

The complaint highlighted egregious violations of Title IX, including instances where female students were pressured to share intimate spaces with a biological male, undermining their rights and safety.

“For years, far too many states and school districts have been violating their obligations under Title IX and the Constitution,” said Jacob Huebert, President of the Liberty Justice Center. “We applaud the Department of Justice’s commitment to ending discrimination against women and girls and holding states and schools accountable, and we look forward to continuing to help them do that.”

The Liberty Justice Center is proud to have played a role in bringing attention to these critical issues. The Department’s investigations and the formation of this team reaffirm the importance of holding educational institutions accountable for their obligations under Title IX.

As the SIT begins its work, the Liberty Justice Center stands ready to support its efforts to ensure that schools across the country comply with the law and respect the rights of all students.

The federal complaint filed by LJC and DFI is available here.
