About the Role
The Director of Communications is responsible for advancing LJC’s mission by driving strategic communications, marketing, and public engagement. This role will shape and amplify LJC’s voice nationwide, ensuring consistent, high-impact messaging across all channels.
They will also report to the CEO & COO. The Director will lead LJC’s communications, public relations, digital media, and marketing functions, overseeing strategy, execution, and team performance. This is a fully remote position with occasional travel.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Communications & Brand Leadership
- Develop and lead the execution of a national, multi-channel communications strategy that elevates LJC’s cases, brand, and influence
- Partner with senior leadership to shape and implement short- and long-term public relations strategies that strengthen LJC’s brand and visibility
- Oversee message development to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment across all platforms, audiences, and initiatives
- Identify and prioritize high-impact opportunities to position LJC as a leading voice on constitutional rights and public-interest litigation
Media Relations & Public Affairs
- Build, manage, and deepen relationships with key journalists, editors, producers, and influencers across national, regional, and digital media
- Proactively secure high-value media placements, including earned media, interviews, features, and broadcast opportunities
- Lead rapid-response communications strategy around court decisions, breaking news, and emerging issues
- Expand LJC’s national media footprint through strategic outreach and coordination with external partners
Team Leadership & Execution
- Lead and manage the communications, public relations, digital media, and marketing team, fostering a high-performance, accountable, and collaborative culture
- Oversee day-to-day execution of communications initiatives, ensuring projects are delivered on time and at a high standard
- Coordinate cross-functional efforts to ensure alignment and maximize impact across all communications channels
Digital Media & Content Strategy
- Oversee the strategy, production, and growth of LJC’s digital platforms, including website, email, and social media channels
- Drive content creation that translates complex legal work into compelling, accessible narratives
- Ensure consistent storytelling that highlights LJC’s cases, clients, and broader impact
Substack & Podcast Strategy
- Oversee the editorial direction, production, and growth of LJC’s Substack and podcast
- Develop content strategies that expand audience reach, deepen engagement, and reinforce LJC’s thought leadership
- Identify and pursue opportunities to grow subscriber base, listenership, and cross-platform distribution
- Ensure consistent, high-quality output aligned with organizational priorities and messaging
Op-Eds & Thought Leadership
- Develop and execute a strategy for placing op-eds and written commentary in top-tier national, regional, and digital outlets
- Work with internal subject matter experts to draft, edit, and refine opinion pieces and long-form content
- Ensure a steady cadence of published thought leadership that advances LJC’s policy and legal positions
- Identify timely opportunities to insert LJC’s voice into public debates and emerging issues
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with the legal team to translate active and potential cases into timely, accurate, and compelling communications
- Partner with the development team to promote cases and initiatives in ways that engage donors and inspire philanthropic support
- Align communications efforts with organizational priorities to support fundraising, litigation, and growth objectives
Stakeholder & Coalition Engagement
- Maintain and strengthen relationships with allied organizations and communications leaders across the free market and liberty movement
- Identify opportunities for strategic partnerships, joint messaging, and coalition-based amplification
- Elevate client stories through media and digital channels to humanize LJC’s work and demonstrate real-world impact
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in communications, marketing, or public relations
- Demonstrated success in leading and developing high-performing teams
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills
- Strong strategic thinking with the ability to execute in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent organizational and project management abilities, with strong attention to detail
- Self-starter who can manage multiple priorities and deadlines effectively
- Collaborative team player with strong interpersonal skills
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience
- Deep alignment with and commitment to LJC’s mission
- Ability to travel up to 20%
