Liberty Justice Center Statement on the U.S. House Committee on Education & Workforce’s Letter Demanding Missing Financial Audits from the Chicago Teachers Union

November 24, 2025

On November 21, the Liberty Justice Center made a statement on the breaking news regarding the U.S. House Committee on Education & Workforce’s letter, sent November 20, to the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU) demanding their legally required documents and financial audits. Additional resources are available on our case page, Weiss v. Chicago Teachers Union.

Statement from Ángel Valencia, Senior Counsel, Liberty Justice Center:

“Thirteen months ago, the Liberty Justice Center, on behalf of several Chicago Teachers Union dues-paying members, filed a lawsuit seeking CTU’s financial audits for the last five years, which its Constitution and Bylaws require be made available to members.

Now the U.S. House Committee on Education and Workforce is demanding CTU provide these records.

Had CTU provided these documents to our clients when they requested them, neither our lawsuit, nor the Committee’s inquiry would have been necessary. Instead CTU has spent members’ union dues on legal fees trying to avoid transparency and accountability of their financial books. Until our clients obtain these records and CTU complies with its bylaws, we will continue to advance the lawsuit, which remains pending.

We are hopeful that the Committee’s demands will help deliver justice for our clients along with the annual financial audits that have been missing for more than five years.”
