Buck Dougherty

Senior Counsel, Liberty Justice Center

Buck Dougherty is a Senior Counsel at the Liberty Justice Center, where he litigates in trial and appellate courts on behalf of everyday citizens to protect their civil liberties and preserve their constitutional rights. Upon joining Liberty Justice Center in 2021, he was part of LJC’s team of attorneys who obtained the first nationwide stay in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals to stop the OSHA vaccine mandate, which would have affected approximately 80 million Americans. The United States Supreme Court later upheld the Fifth Circuit’s ruling, preventing the OSHA vaccine mandate from taking effect. Buck made several national media appearances with Liberty Justice Center’s client in that case, including on NBC Nightly News, the TODAY Show, Newsmax, various radio podcasts, and in print media.

Buck serves as lead counsel on several high-profile First Amendment cases for Liberty Justice Center clients. This includes representing a data analyst with over 100,000 social media followers who was deplatformed for posting his views on COVID-19, and a peaceful and law abiding college student who was blocked from posting her innocuous photograph of the U.S. Capitol during the January 6 events following the 2020 election. Buck also serves as lead counsel on behalf of an online media organization in a First Amendment freedom of the press case to obtain public access to meetings of an advisory commission that recommends court rules to a state supreme court. He previously represented a former NFL player turned high school football coach in a First Amendment retaliation case.

In 2020, America’s Top 100 High Stakes Litigators selected Buck as one of its top litigators in Tennessee. To be considered for selection, an attorney must have litigated a matter for either plaintiff or defendant, with at least $2 million in alleged damages or with the fate of a business worth at least $2 million at stake (bet-the-company-litigation). Buck was also selected by Super Lawyers as a Mid-South Rising Star in 2012-2013.

Before joining LJC, he was a litigator in private practice as a partner or shareholder in various law firms, including an Am Law 100 firm.

Buck holds a B.S. from the University of Tampa, where he was a member of the 1987 NCAA Div. II Final Four soccer team. He earned his J.D. from Samford University, Cumberland School of Law, where he was selected to The Order of Barristers, a national honor society for law school graduates who demonstrate exceptional skill in trial advocacy, oral advocacy, and brief writing.

When he’s not litigating constitutional cases in court, he enjoys playing golf, hiking, reading, writing, and hanging out with his sons.

Buck is licensed to practice law in Tennessee and is admitted to the United States Supreme Court, Sixth and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeals, and various federal district courts in Tennessee and Michigan.
