(Chino Valley Champion)—The Orange County Board of Education and the Anderson Union High School District in Northern California, south of Redding, have voted to join the Chino Valley Unified School District in its lawsuit challenging AB 1955, which is legislation that would ban schools from informing parents when their child requests a name or pronoun change or to use a restroom for the opposite gender.
The Liberty Justice Center, based in Texas, is representing the school districts at no charge.
AB 1955 was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom on July 15, and it will take effect on Jan. 1, 2025.
Gov. Newsom, Attorney General Rob Bonta, and State Superintendent Tony Thurmond are listed as defendants.
The Orange County Board of Education voted on Aug. 7 and Anderson Union High School District voted on July 31. “I think it’s important that we stand with Chino Valley because parents make the best decisions for their children,” Orange County Board of Education Vice President Mari Barke said.
The Liberty Justice Center filed the lawsuit the day after Gov. Newsom signed the bill into law.
