ISSUE BACKGROUND: On August 28, 2023, California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit attempting to prevent the Chino Valley Unified School District from enforcing its recently implemented parental notification policy. The policy ensures parents receive critical information related to their children’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being by requiring school administrators to inform parents if their children request to be referred to by a name or by pronouns that differ from those on official records or ask to enroll in programs or use facilities that don’t align with their sex at birth.
In a hearing on September 6, Judge Thomas Garza of San Bernardino County granted the Attorney General’s motion for a temporary restraining order until the matter could be considered in full. The Liberty Justice Center stepped in to represent the district on September 11, 2023.
