On Thursday, January 12, Liberty Justice Center attorney Reilly Stephens argued against forcing teachers to accept union representation before the United States Court of Appeals at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Massachusetts law forces teachers to accept a union as their “exclusive representative” in salary negotiations, grievance procedures and other matters—including teachers who aren’t union members and don’t want a union to represent them. LJC’s client, Richard Peltz-Steele, is fighting for his right to choose who speaks for him, which should protected under the First Amendment and the landmark Supreme Court ruling in Janus v. AFSCME.
